My facebook profile statement "about me" reads:
"I like to hide in my house and pat cats"
My family are pretty much the same. We are lucky to have a nice home where we recently created more spaces for growing boys, so this helps, and we also have a nice backyard. 6yrs ago we rented a 2bedroom flat with no outdoor area ( no balcony or courtyard ) and i've been thinking about that often and how hard it would be for families in homes like that.
Our council likes to promote "New York Style" apartments, boasting about our proximity to public transport and local parks. Cafes and restaurants galore, you don't need a big kitchen or pantry space, ha ha, you will be too busy being out and about and fancy. I have to admit i've been suckered into this thinking myself. We've become so accustomed to being able to pop out at anytime, for anything. You can even buy microwave mashed potato for $2. When we're both working and dead beat, AB might bring us home a fully cooked roast pork, with some microwave broccolini and aforementioned mash on the side. I don't think it's particularly healthy and i've pointed out the UK's microwave curry culture as an example ... but gosh it's nice sometimes.
So those people living the New York dream locally with their tiny kitchens and mini fridges.. well you're not supposed to be going to the park, or using PT ( unless you really have to ), and the restaurants are closed. You also may no longer have a job, so fancypants cafe life becomes Nescafe from a jar. Although our hood just got shamed for being out and about again. Apparently, we can't live without takeout coffee. AB had to go to the post office today and the cafe next door was bustling. I haven't left the house in 4 weeks.
Just before the coronavirus, we got pantry moths. I threw out all the things and said to the kids "that's it!! - when was the last time I baked anyway? - we don't need flour, we won't be keeping reserves ever again, if we need something, we will go to the shops and buy a small quantity as a one-off"
But now i'm at home and thinking about that cake I used to make when I was a SAHM. Sure, i've never been a baker, but I loved making that cake for special occasions. Now we just get a Coles Mudcake and chuck some sprinkles on it. We're lazy, we're fast, we're busy and we're tired.
We have 3 birthdays this month, April is hectic, it's actually annoying, but this year i'm going to make cake. Probably. Just to see if it really is as yum as I remember. From memory it tastes like the Coles white mudcake so I could probably just buy one of those and be done with it.. we'll see :D
Pictured above is the one I made from my 38th birthday, long long ago :)
